Action! by Design has been engaged by JDAI, an initiative of the MA Department of Youth Services, to imagine a new path forward for youth justice in Massachusetts that is trauma-informed, antiracist, developmentally appropriate to the age of the child, and rooted in transformative justice practices. We came to that charge following the development of a community engagement strategy and an initial round of facilitated workshops looking to understand the core issues within the juvenile justice system.
Our work led us to the school-to-prison pipeline. We are now building a statewide community of practice to disrupt and eliminate this pipeline by expanding JDAI’s partner networks to schools, districts, and education-focused community-based organizations and producing events and initiatives to drive this work forward.
Watch our first summit, Reimagining School Climate: A Convening for Collection Action to Eliminate the School-to-Prison Pipeline, below.

Reimagining School Climate
The “school-to-prison pipeline” is, in reality, two pipelines that combine to drive students out of the classroom, away from a pathway to success, and towards or into the juvenile or criminal legal system (Citizens for Juvenile Justice).
At this summit, people with lived experience and practitioners in education and youth justice spoke on the harms of the school-to-prison pipeline, its impact on achieving equitable outcomes for youth, and a vision for a different path forward.
